Abbeville, SC - Downtown - Part 2

Abbeville, SC is a pretty little town.  I worked here early in my
career and have many fun memories of downtown.  Here are
a few photos from our visit last week.

.The town is on a square.  This view is from the park in the middle
of the the square looking out to the courthouse.

Next to the courthouse is the Opera House!  The Opera House
is a very old theater that has been restored.  I've traveled to
Abbeville just for the theater productions and they have been
wonderful!

After an evening at the theater, you can walk next door to the
Belmont and spend the night in this historic inn.  DH and I stayed
in the room with the upstairs porch one December.  We were able
to see all the Christmas lights downtown!

Now, let's take a walk around the square.
This is the length of the square.

Poliakoff's was a shoe store.  It was a tradition for everyone
in Abbleville County to bring their children to Mr. Poliakoff
to have their feet measured and their first baby shoes fitted.

Abbeville is beautiful and quaint, but it is not growing, which can
be a good thing.  The old part of town is a series of antique and
gift shops now.  Everyone goes to the next town to shop Walmart.

One thing Abbeville does have is beautiful churches!  Notice the
scroll work on the side door of this Presbyterian church.
Then across the street is the Methodist church and door.
And my card in my camera was full before I could take pictures of
the other churches on the next two corners.  There is one more sad
story about a church in Abbeville that I will save for another post.
It is all about good intentions at preservation that went bad..

Thank you for joining us today.  We will visit Abbeville again.  Hope
you are having a good week!
Love,
Lottie

  1. The town looks so beautiful. I wish I could say the same for our hometown. Progress here did not leave out town for the better. Most of the buildings I knew as a young girl was torn down to build parking lots and malls.

  2. A charming town -- reminds me of my town on the prairie!

  3. My husband and i are thinking of moving here with our 2 boys. We currently live in a suburb south of Atlanta and live a very busy hurried life. We are looking for a quaint little town to move to so that maybe perhaps we can slow down a bit and raise our family. I would like to buy an older home within walking distance to downtown. In your opinion do you think this would be a nice place to raise a family? I look forward to hearing what you think. Thanks!

  4. Dear Anonymous,
I don't know you or your situation so I'm not sure how to respond. It was over ten years ago that I worked in Abbeville so I don't know the town now. It certainly IS beautiful! But I think living close to Atlanta is pretty nice, too! Lots of young families and lots of opportunity in Atlanta. Also you are close to medical facilities and shopping and cultural events. (I love Atlanta) My best advice is to stay where the job is.

Personally, for my family, we like living in a city. We like the busy hurried life. We found out it was up to us to slow our life down. So...I take pictures of old houses ...every town has a street of beautiful turn of the century homes! (My children never cared a thing about older homes or shops. My boys just cared about playing sports and adventure....so you have to look at the whole picture.) Also, believe me, an older home can cost a fortune to maintain!

Hope you and your family have a wonderful day! Best of luck!
