His favorite saying is Life is What You Make It! Whenever I complained as a kid, he always brought up the fact that I had it pretty good in life and someone somewhere had it worse. Hard to argue with that! I think that way now. But when I was a kid, I didn't understand why we didn't have everything we wanted. I asked him one time why he didn't spoil me and my brothers? He stopped his work and looked right at me. He said because kids grow up and move away. I didn't understand that logic until I had my own kids and they grew up and moved away. Ouch!
Dad loves to work. He says the word "fun" is not in his vocabulary. Well, I know for a fact that is not true because I remember lots of fun as a kid. He took us to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky several times. Each time he had as much fun as we did! .

ReplyDeleteHaving had 4 daughters he did the best to show us that it's fun to watch football, work in the garden, grill burgers outside or in the fireplace. He didn't play dolls with us or have tea parties. Come to think of it, I don't remember Mom doing that either! They were so busy and kids were supposed to entertain themselves. But when he was away from home with us, at the beach or at trips to visit aunts and uncles, he became like a kid again and I loved hearing him laugh and be silly.
My Dad has always had a special place in my heart. He nurtured and protected us while working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to keep our family afloat. But he always had a smile on his face and a moment to share with us. I remember lots of fun playing soccer, his silly songs, playing in the water and camping. I'm blessed that he is still with us at 81 and cherish each of our monthly lunch dates.

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have such a great relationship with your father...he sounds like a good dad. Wow, 89 years old, he is doing well!
ReplyDeleteMy father always told us that if we were bored, it was our own faults. My father never let himself be bored with life. I learned to find pleasure and beauty in life around me and appreciate it.
